Saint-Philippe

Saint-Philippe

Saint-Philippe is home to the vacoa tree, which thrives on sea soil, wind, sun and sea spray. Here, the leaves of this strange tree, recognizable by its above-ground roots and ruffled head, are used by the locals, who weave them into baskets, mats, baskets, hats… People also eat the heart (cabbage) or the inflorescences, known as pinpins.
Saint-Philippe celebrates vacoa in August with a show followed by the election of Miss Vacoa.
