History

After two temporary occupations from 1646 to 1649 and from 1654 to 1658, permanent settlement of the island began at Saint-Paul in November 1663 with the arrival of Louis Payen and ten Malagasy servants, seven men and three women. They settled near the caves, where water flowed in abundance(grotte des premiers français). Saint-Paul became the cradle of the island’s population.

Getting around

It’s difficult to get around downtown Saint-Paul, as traffic is often very heavy. As the downtown area is relatively concentrated, we advise you to park your car and visit it on foot.
