Piton d’Anchaing hike

Duration: 5h30 round trip. Difficult level. Elevation gain: 690 m.
Start: after Ilet à Vidot, at the end of the road.
Exceptional panorama of the entire cirque of Salazie.

The Piton d’Anchaing is linked to the story of two slaves: Anchaing, a legendary brown slave from Reunion Island, and Héva, his companion. Anchaing loved a young slave named Héva, and one day they decided to flee the brutality of their masters. So they took refuge at the top of a mountain reputed to be inaccessible. Today, this spectacular peak is known as Piton d’Anchaing (or Enchaing).

Tip: don’t do this hike if it’s raining, and be very careful, especially on the way down, as the trail can be slippery in some places. Set off early in the morning to admire the many unique viewpoints over the Salazie cirque.
