Bras de la Plaine is accessible from Entre-Deux. The site takes its name from its geographical location between two river arms: the Bras de la Plaine and the Bras de Cilaos. The commune’s motto “Deux Bras, un Cœur” (Two arms, one heart) also refers to this location.
Bras de la Plaine is an exceptional geological site. It has a surprisingly wild character, with basaltic organs, caves and a natural arch reminiscent of an elephant. It is one of the most beautiful gorges on the island. Thanks to its special climate, it boasts exceptional biodiversity. You’ll find bamboos, lianas and galaberts, as well as chocas and fruit trees.
The river that meanders through the heart of the island is home to eels and small fry, known as bichiques, which are highly prized in Réunionese cuisine. The many caves are home to protected endemic birds such as the paille-en-queue, the papangue, the green bird and the spectacled bird.
Example of a family itinerary: the Bras de la Plaine trail. Duration: 1h40 return. Difficulty: easy. Elevation gain: 160m.
