Originally, the region was populated by “petits blancs” (small white men) seeking to escape poverty by moving to the Hauts. They gave their new home the name “Plaine des Palmistes” because of the large number of Red Palm trees proliferating in the area. Many were slaughtered for their delicious edible hearts (known as chou de palmiste). That’s why very few of them remain in the commune today.
Guava Festival (June)
Music, parades, tastings, election of Miss Guava, gastronomy contest. An opportunity to celebrate the harvest of this small, tart red fruit.
