La Plaine des Cafres

La Plaine des Cafres is located in the heights of Le Tampon, on a plateau between the Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise massifs. It is an essential stop-off point on the way to the Piton de la Fournaise volcano. It owes its name to the Cafres (or Kaf), black slaves who used to hide here.

La Plaine des Cafres is separated from La Plaine des Palmistes by the Bellevue pass, which rises to an altitude of 1,630 meters. The climate is cool, and temperatures can be close to 0°C at night in winter. The landscape is made up of pastures reminiscent in some respects of the Alps or Switzerland, but also of wild moors dotted with heather, gorse and St John’s wort.
