Maison de l’Inde

90 Rue Pierre-Mendès-France , 97450 Saint-Louis

La Maison de l’Inde is an ashram, a place of worship, meditation and fraternity. The hosts invite visitors to come and discover this sacred place, its history and its works of art. You can also learn Sanskrit, music or religion, or even stay overnight. A place of meditation, contemplation and prayer, but also a crossroads for the arts, it is a model of openness and fraternity.

In the large meditation room, musical instruments and some impressive religious sculptures from India can be discovered, as well as a beautiful library stocked with philosophical and esoteric works and large paintings featuring the iconography, vivid colors and sense of detail of Hindu figurative art.

Nearby is the Tamil temple of Pandialé, dedicated to Vishnu under the name of Gôvinda. Inside, altars are also dedicated to Kali and Madévirin. The walls are entirely decorated with frescoes painted on lime plaster by an anonymous artist. Arranged in registers, the scenes depict episodes from the Mahabarata or the Ramayana, epics from Indian religious history. A firewalk takes place in February.
