As you leave the town to the south, towards Saint-Gilles-les-Bains on the left, opposite the marine cemetery, you can take a pleasant stroll through the grounds of the Grotte des Premiers Français or Grotte du Peuplement. It is in this cave that the island’s first occupants are said to have found refuge. Well laid out, with numerous panels explaining the history of Saint-Paul and La Réunion, it’s the ideal place for a break or a picnic.
