97470 Saint-Benoît
Situated at an altitude of 500 metres, nestled in the heart of a wild natural site, close to the road leading to La Plaine-des-Palmistes, the Grand Étang is the only lake of volcanic origin at altitude on Reunion Island. This water reservoir, surrounded by ramparts of exuberant vegetation, was created by a landslide.
A short, pleasant half-hour hike leads to this beautiful stretch of water, 1 km long and around 500 m wide, surrounded by high basalt ramparts. The site is particularly relaxing and conducive to rejuvenation. You can then walk (or ride) around the 4-kilometre stretch in around 1? hours, along a path lined with coloured, guava and jamerosa trees, and continue on to the Bras d’Annette waterfalls (30-minute round trip), in a magnificent, peaceful setting of lush, unspoilt vegetation.
Please note, however, that the water level in the pond can vary considerably according to rainfall.
